: [Mahindra, Mumbai-1 at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., my six stretch marks, keep keys here after locking the cupboard and a three months old fetus which causes stretch marks

Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) group had sponsored the video installation (hair removal, wax strips) exhibited in August 1998. As custom, the artist was to present a work to them after the show. I, for the very nature of my work, was anxious about the its content and relevance when displaced into an office premise, such as the M&M. To deal with the same, undertook this project, which incorporates images that are very familiar to those in that office. Though part of their everyday schedule, these images are suspended in a space of unfamiliarity - and continue to be personal // also for the artist. Undertaken during the month of November and executed over a period of a month and a half, the work process consisted of documenting specific locations, and working on the relationships created, when these images were digitally combined.

Documented, i.e. photograph-ed. The very activity involves the act of making permanent / exposing / making available. Here they are
exteriors of M&M office at 8 a.m.// 8 p.m. (office hours are from 9am to 5pm)
guard reading newspaper // entrance shut.
Stretch marks on the artists // my body
The place where I keep keys after locking the cupboard. Moments/images - unavailable/ hidden/ unacknowledged. All of which is yet so everyday.

Address-es
For M&M personnel.
On my body, her body- 1 2 3 4 5 6
On their wall.
While 'address' indicates permanence/constancy/ something definite, the images being digitally combined risks the possibility of the opposite i.e. of manipulation/deception.
Also ambiguous, (initially) is the image of a three months old fetus. Text confirms that the fetus causes stretch marks.

The alliance of images with the text, always understood as 'The Title' works at various levels. By suspending the Real with that which may not so; authenticity of both is risked. // Where contemporary lifestyles grow even more ambiguous each day //. They are familiar and yet not seen so. The stretch marks may be of 'The Artist's' and yet could be of anybody's. They could surely not be of the artist. I really do hide my keys there. And they really are my marks and it is my body and the fetus is not mine. So, is there no cupboard too. But she says they are the keys and maybe the cupboard is empty. And the guard reading the newspaper is the same person who stands there everyday. But I have never seen the door locked. Of course the guard can read and maybe the fetus is hers. Its not mine though.
